AAP Revamps Punjab Unit, Appoints Five Vice Presidents

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday undertook a major reshuffle of its organisational structure in Punjab, making 81 key appointments to strengthen its foothold in the state.

Among the significant changes, four sitting legislators — Manjinder Singh Lalpura, Amandeep Kaur, Charanjit Singh, and Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar — have been appointed as state vice-presidents. In a notable move, Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, the Banga legislator who contested the 2022 Assembly polls on a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ticket but joined AAP last year, has also been named a party vice-president. Despite joining AAP, Sukhi has not resigned as an MLA and continues to be an SAD legislator officially.

The organisational revamp aims to balance representation by including women, socially disadvantaged groups, old party workers, and loyalists. The restructuring follows two months of consultations led by AAP’s Punjab affairs incharge, Manish Sisodia, who conducted training camps for party volunteers and gathered their feedback.

Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang has been assigned a prominent role as state general secretary, joining Harchand Singh Barsat, Dr Sunny Ahluwalia, and Deepak Bali in the position. Previously, the party had two general secretaries—Barsat and Jagroop Singh Sekhwan—with Sekhwan now focusing exclusively on his area.

The revamp signals AAP’s intent to consolidate its organisational strength ahead of upcoming political challenges in Punjab.
